Chao Chao Gyoza
About This Spot
Stepping into Chao Chao Gyoza in the heart of Osaka’s Kita Ward feels like entering a small, lively pocket where the day’s pace gently slows down. The space is intimate, with just about ten bar seats snugly arranged, inviting a close-up encounter with the art of dumpling making and the warm hum of shared meals. This cozy izakaya buzzes quietly—part neighborhood spot, part personal sanctuary—where everything from conversation to the clink of glasses happens at a human scale.
The bar-style seating encourages connection, not just among friends but with the atmosphere itself. It’s a simple place, unassuming yet full of character, where the scent of impeccably crafted gyoza fills the air—each bite a satisfying balance of crisp edges and tender fillings that have clearly been perfected over time. Whether you’re sampling the signature pork dumplings or exploring the more playful varieties like shrimp or even dessert gyoza, the experience is rooted in authenticity and thoughtful care.
Here, the menu feels like a friendly guide rather than a list, gently nudging guests toward small plates designed to complement the gyoza’s delicate flavors. Side dishes hold their own personality—refreshing pickles or a lightly spiced cucumber salad—while drinks, from crisp beers to smooth highballs, quietly round out the experience, offering little celebratory pauses between bites.
Chao Chao Gyoza doesn’t strive for spectacle; its warmth lies in its simplicity and the understated joy of gathering over food that feels deeply local. It’s a place where regulars and newcomers alike find comfort in a quick meal or an after-work unwind, savoring moments that are as much about human connection as they are about flavor.

Chao Chao Gyoza is a must-visit if you’re in Umeda and craving delicious gyozas. Their house special pork gyozas are a steal at just 670 yen for 16 pieces! We also tried the shrimp gyozas, and both were fantastic, complete with the classic crispy fried “winged” edges that make them so satisfying. This tiny izakaya has a cozy, authentic vibe with just about 10 seats, so it’s perfect for a quick, casual bite. The staff are friendly, and the prices are incredibly affordable. Definitely worth a stop for gyoza lovers!

A small bar style gyoza restaurant with a wide variety of gyoza to choose from. This restaurant has so many gyoza options to choose from and they all look delicious. I tried their classic gyoza, curry gyoza, and boiled shrimp gyoza. Each was delicious with a thin delicate wrapper. The curry and classic gyoza were my favorite. The restaurant is all bar style seating with a space overhead for bag/personal item storage. The menus are both in English and Japanese and the staff speak some english as well. A drink is required to dine here but they have many options both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. The space is small with limited seating so you may have to wait if you come during a busy time.

Small and vibrant place to taste some of the best gyoza. Dumpling skin chips with icecream was also delicious.

If you’re looking for a quick and delicious meal in this area of Osaka this place is the perfect choice. Not a massive selection on the menu as it’s mainly the gyozas but that’s because they do them to perfection! Incredibly cheap too!

Just experienced the amazingness of Chao Chao Gyoza! Seriously authentic Japanese food and YES, they have fantastic vegan/vegetarian options too! Loved their true Uji matcha, refreshing Osaka juice, and those vegan gyoza and cheese balls were incredible. Highly recommend if you want to eat like a local in Japan!

Cute little gyoza place with a great selection of gyoza. We tried the shrimp gyoza, the ume plum & shiso perilla, chicken & mozzarella, the chao chao pork gyoza, and the edamame. All delicious. The owner/chef was super friendly and efficient.

This tiny gyoza place is phenomenal! If you want an experience on how dense this city is, this is the place to feel it and be able to taste the best gyoza in town! You have to try all flavours in order to get the best taste out of this tiny restaurant and don't miss the signature gyoza "pizza". It's the best! And also try the mouth watering chocolate gyoza too! They use the finest chocolate to make them. It gets really busy and you will need to queue up because they can only fit ~12 customers at any one time but you can always get take away over the window counter if you don't want to dine in.
